The History of Capo Carbonara

The little town of Carbonara, named Villasimius since 1862, due its name to the intensive coal exploitation once practised throughout this land. Centuries after centuries, its coast has been a strategic point for the medieval control of sea traffics.

Numberless sighting towers, which sometimes have arisen from ancient nuraghe, bear witness of pirates presence as well.

Coast Towers
Tower of San Luigi on Serpentara, tower of Poro Giunco on Isola dei Cavoli, Capo Boi and Fortezza Vecchia are the ruins of a sighting system defending the entire Gulf of Cagliari.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL
Numerous wrecks belonging to different periods have lied on the seabed of Villasimius for centuries.

The most ancient piece is a Roman ship, dated 250 a. C. containing amphora and ceramics. Other important archaeological finds are a Spanish galleon and a laden with medieval crockery. Archaeological Museum of Villasimius is the fundamental point for those studying evidences of the past in detail.

Under the sea there still is a late wreck: it is steamship Egle, sunk in 1943.
